Having completed his M.Sc. from Kerala University, he went on to obtain a Ph.D. from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, and did his post-doctoral research at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Dr Padmanabhan has been Senior Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy (IOA), Cambridge, Visiting Faculty at Princeton University, Pennsylvania State University and Caltech, and Sackler Distinguished Astronomer at IOA, Cambridge, apart from holding faculty positions at TIFR, Mumbai, Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad and Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. Dr Padmanabhan's list of awards is endless, the most recent among them being the Homi Bhabha Fellowship (2003), G.D.Birla Award for Scientific Research (2003), Miegunah Fellowship Award, University of Melbourne, Australia (2004), Padma Shri [awarded by the President of India] (2007), INSA Vainu-Bappu Medal (2007), First Prize in Gravity Essay Contest (awarded by Gravity Research Foundation, USA) (2008), J.C.Bose Fellowship, DST (2008) and the Infosys Science Prize in Physical Sciences, ISF (2009). He has also authored a large number of books, prominently, After the first three minutes - The story of our universe (1998), Theoretical Astrophysics - Volumes I, II and III (2000-2002), An invitation to Astrophysics (2006), Quantum Themes: The Charms of the Microworld (2009) and Gravitation: Foundations and Frontiers. How did the universe originate? What drives its expansion? What is the final stage of a collapsing black hole or the strong gravity region resulting from a star's collapse? These questions are the essence of life for Dr Padmanabhan. His long and vast experience in the field will be source of inspiration and enlightenment at this lecture. |
